OBLONG ANTENNAS FOR 432 MHZ BAND
Unlike yagis, performances of quads and oblongs are very dependable on the element thickness. At the first sight, one can find their gain is better with small diameter. Actually, this is not true. Here you can see that the best performances are comming with thick elements. The first reason is higher material loss. Therefore, I suggest using low loss materijal (silver or silvered rods), if you want thin elements. Aluminum rods of 3,2 to 5 mm can be used as a reasonable solution between performances and constructive possibilities. Though the best performances are achieved with 10 mm diameter (and probably still better with bigger thickness), I think the best choice for oblong antennas for 432 MHz is aluminum tubing 8 milimeters thick.
Here you can find oblong models sorted by the element thickness and by the boom length. The tables show their basic performances and, if you want to see more, just click on the antenna type. The link will bring you to the antenna radiation, gain and SWR patterns, and to the dimensions for building. Also, you will see comparison table versus a classic yagi of the same boom length (YU7EF design used).
In the tables below, for any model, you can see the data for no-loss material in the first row, then for aluminum in the second and, finally, for silver rods (tubes) in the third row. The data sorted in such a way, can give you good sense of the antenna behaviour in ideal and in real condition.
Please, note that all the model characteristics stand for calculated, not for measured data. Just a few of the models have been built and checked in practice (and all proven good!).
Also note that I do not claime these models are the best. I am sure that some more performances can be taken out, but this will be the matter of further works. I will be happy if I persuade and encourage hams to design and build oblong antennas, proving that their potential is significantly higher than for yagis, especially on the bands of 432 and 1296 MHz.
Finally, reading this, you will come to the same conclusion as I did: the longer boom the bigger difference between yagies and oblongs! This is why I find oblongs the best solution for 432 and 1296 MHz – where the antenna boom can be made long enough to take these benefits!
